Timeline


In this timeline, you can see the introductions, exits, and changes of various delivery companies. App-based delivery started in 2016 with Deliveroo and shortly after Uber. Later, more companies joined. Only UberEATS remained in 2025.

  • Deliveroo is the first to start delivering meals in Amsterdam via a Rider app (which offers performance bonuses).

  • Foodora expands to the Netherlands (not freelance but app-based). Foodora leaves in 2018.

  • UberEATS follows Deliveroo and also starts delivering meals via an app (and performance bonuses), but uses the freelance model to work with riders.

  • FNV starts a lawsuit together with Amsterdam couriers against Deliveroo to fight against the freelance model.

  • Deliveroo riders in South Holland start an experiment with freelance accounts instead of being employees.

  • All Deliveroo riders must switch to a freelance account.

  • Meal delivery grows during the Covid pandemic. Flash delivery services Gorilla and Getir come online. But leave again after the Covid period.

  • Deliveroo leaves the Netherlands. Riders receive compensation negotiated with FNV.

  • UberEATS stops working with freelance riders (and offers a small compensation to freelancers) and switches to working with employment agencies Adecco and Randstad.
